Washington DC 4/17

We woke early this morning and began our day on the Metro destined for Union Station; famous for its shops and classy atmosphere. We grabbed some coffee and muffins and headed out on our way to Capitol Hill. Thankfully we got started early as we were able to capture some beautiful shots of the Capitol building and surrounding landscape before the mass of tourists arrived. After visiting the Capitol we took a stroll through the botanical garden, stopping often to enjoy the many varieties of tulips growing. A new variety I’ve never seen before, the ‘peony’ tulip has now been added to my favorite flowers list. We enjoyed some snacks from a cart nearby and continued our tour with the National Archives where we spent an hour in line waiting to see the Constitution, Bill of Rights and the Declaration of Independence. Although unable to take any decent photographs of these papers (the ink is too faded and the light provided very dim), the experience goes on our list of MUST SEE(s) while visiting DC. This evening, we noticed that the Tidal Basin was well lit and that the Jefferson Memorial held the best possible position for sunset photos so we headed in that direction. We spent the better part of the night at the Memorial in awe of the accomplishments of one man so many years ago. This is our favorite of the Monuments/Memorials so far on the trip. Before heading back to the hotel and to bed, we stopped by the FDR Memorial and Lincoln. Both of these are places we would like to go back to for pictures in the daytime. -D
