70/45

Sleep NumberFor the 10+ years Dani and I have been together we’ve always had the same mattress & box spring. Typically, a bed set will last 10 years before needing replacement which wouldn’t have been a problem for us if we hadn’t inherited the bed set from Dani’s mother who also used it for many years! Needless to say the bed was well past its prime and we were really starting to notice it in our lack of sleep and back pains. So after deciding it was time to invest in a new bed we were on to figuring out exactly what we wanted. Our biggest difference in opinion was soft vs. hard… Dani loves to sink into beds that have big down comforters and pillow top covers, I on the other hand, am perfectly happy sleeping on the floor. Obviously no one traditional bed was going to accommodate our needs, so we started looking into the Sleep Number beds. If you’re unfamiliar with these, the beds have two air chambers, which can be independently inflated/deflated to each sleeper’s comfort. We visited the Select Comfort store a couple of times before deciding on a particular model that we liked and that was within budget. So we made the purchase and the bed was delivered to us via UPS in 5 big boxes. I spent about 1 ½ hours assembling the plastic platform (replaces a box spring) and hooking up the air chambers. Friday night was our first night on the new bed, Dani started out at 20 and I at 90. They tell you to adjust your setting a little every night so you can figure out your exact number. We’re currently at 70 (me) and 45 (her). I’ve already seen a big improvement in my ability to fall asleep quickly and have fewer back pains when I wake up. The real test will be during the next couple of weeks when we can test it our at normal exhaustion levels, and not during a long holiday weekend!
