Pet Peeves: Driving

YIKES It's a good thing I don't do much commuting during the week because I might have actually lost my mind by now. Here's a list (in no particular order) of the things that irritate me most about drivers today...

Smoking
I get that smoking is your choice, I'm fine with that, even though I personally think it's a disgusting habit. The part that I can't stand is when smokers CHOOSE to throw their cigarette butts out the window. How does anyone think this is acceptable? The time it irritates me most is when you're driving at night and you see a tiny fireball coming right at your car. I wish I could do what they do in the movies and take all their butts and throw them back into their car! Be responsible, don't litter.

Blinkers
Does anyone know what these are anymore? Unless I missed something, I believe they are still available in EVERY CAR EVER. I guess it's just a matter of common courtesy. I also think that some drivers are completely oblivious of their surroundings (which actually freaks me out more), that or they just think they're better than everyone else. Yo, Vin Diesel, use your blinker idiot... your mother raised you better than that.

Cell Phones
I'm unsure what the law is outside of CA, but in CA, it's illegal for drivers to use a cell phone without a hands-free headset (effective July '08). An amendment also made it illegal to text, take photos, download cool new apps (for you iPhoners), etc... as of January '09. I feel that the state did a good job in communicating these new laws well before they went into effect. Now here it is, nearly a year later, and drivers are STILL holding their phones up to their heads! I'm not sure who irritates me more... the person who blatantly does it, or the one who tries to be slick about it (because that person obviously knows about the law). Cell phone related accidents account for almost a half a million injuries and hundreds of deaths a year... there's a reason it's illegal. Besides, if you're using one hand to hold the cell phone you're even less likely to use a blinker. Imagine a smoker who drives while texting... YIKES! Side note: If you do own a hands-free headset, please don't use it outside the car, you look dumb walking around screaming at it.

That's it for now. There will almost certainly be more installments of this type ;-)
